Biomass plant - change of fuel use
Fibrogen
Near Scunthorpe, Yorkshire

A power station originally designed to generate electricity from chicken litter had been granted consent to burn meat and bone meal (MBM) made from non-infected cattle culled during the BSE crisis.

However, once the Government's culling scheme had ended, the power plant wanted to carry on burning MBM due to its superior qualities as a fuel. However, a small number of neighbours wanted to revert to locally produced chicken litter, despite the pungent odours, and expressed concerns about the health risks associated with imported meat and bone meal.

A wide range of on-the-ground communications over a period of time successfully educated people about the benefits of the proposed fuel, as well as causing a number of key stakeholders to change their previously negative opinions. The plant now generates electricity using MBM from across the UK and Europe.
