Power station development - brown field site
Bridestones Developments
Carrington, South Manchester

Bridestones Developments (a wholly owned subsidiary of Carlton Power) submitted an application for a Section 36 Consent for an 860MW gas-fired power plant at Carrington, in South Manchester. A tight planning consent timeframe existed to ensure a suitable National Grid connection could be guaranteed.

There were no objections raised by any of the statutory consultees during the planning process and Pendragon were involved in discussions with key officers and members of Trafford Council to raise awareness of the benefits of regenerating this long-term brownfield site. Pendragon also played a key role mobilising support for the Carrington project among local stakeholders, politicians and media. Subsequent overwhelming backing for the proposals ensured that the government issued planning consent under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 in July 2008.

ESBI, the international arm of the Irish Republic's Electricity Supply Board (ESB), acquired a controlling interest in the project company, Bridestones, from Carlton Power in October 2008. Site enabling works are programmed to start during 2009 with construction scheduled to commence in early 2010.

During construction over 600 jobs will be created with a further 50 people employed full-time when the plant is operational in 2013. The power plant will be capable of supplying electricity to about one million homes.

Councillor Susan Williams, leader of Trafford Council said: "We are delighted that this project is now going ahead and this derelict brownfield site will once again be used for power generation. Trafford Council will continue to work closely with the developer. Carrington is an area in need of regeneration and this project will bring many direct benefits to the council and local communities".
